Oceanic age and transient tracers: Analytical and numerical solutions

چکیده

[1] Transient tracers and the closely related ‘‘age’’ tracers exhibit a rich physical and mathematical structure even for problems of one space dimension. This richness tends to make interpretation of observations, which are inevitably thin in both space and time, difficult, in contrast to the situation in modeling studies. At least six different timescales and corresponding space scales can appear in one-dimensional problems. In higher dimensions the number of scales increases. Several examples of analytical and numerical solutions are explored for the light they cast on understanding a fluid flow. Boundary Green functions emerge as the fundamental physical/ mathematical link between interior tracer distributions and surface and other boundary variations. With transient tracers in inverse calculations one should normally use the underlying tracer distributions to attempt to solve for fundamental fluid properties, such as the mixing coefficients, rather than ambiguous ‘‘ventilation’’ times, which among other problems, may be determined only by the detection threshold and are often mainly functions of the tracer decay constant rather than of fluid properties. Tracers that are transient only through stochastic boundary conditions show that large-scale space/time patterns can emerge in the tracer field, having little or no clear connection to the underlying fluid flow.

Special relative permeability functions with analytical solutions for transient flow into unsaturated rock matrix

[1] This paper presents a class of analytical solutions for transient flow into unsaturated rock matrix. These analytical solutions are derived using specially correlated, physically meaningful relative permeability and capillary functions. The transient flow processes in unsaturated rock matrix blocks are generally described by the Richards’ equation. The analytical solutions describe the full...

New Analytical and CWENO Numerical Solutions for Axisymmetric Horizontal Flows with Heat Sources

Some new nonlinear analytical solutions are found for axisymmetric horizontal flows dominated by strong heat sources. These flows are common in multiscale atmospheric and oceanic flows such as hurricane embryos and ocean gyres. The analytical solutions are illustrated with several examples. The proposed exact solutions provide analytical support for previous numerical observations and can be al...

Hydraulic fracture propagation: analytical solutions versus Lattice simulations

In this work, we used a grain-based numerical model based on the concept of lattice. The modelling was done to simulate the lab experiments carried out on the mortar samples. Also the analytical solutions corresponding to the viscosity-dominated regime were used to estimate the fracture length and width, and the results obtained were compared with the numerical simulations. As the analytical so...

Investigation of analytical and numerical solutions for one-dimensional independent-oftime Schrödinger Equation

In this paper, the numerical solution methods of one- particale, one – dimensional time- independentSchrodinger equation are presented that allows one to obtain accurate bound state eigen values andeigen functions for an arbitrary potential energy function V(x). These methods included the FEM(Finite Element Method), Cooly, Numerov and others. Here we considered the Numerov method inmore details...

Application of Homotopy Perturbation Method to One-dimensional Transient Single-phase EM Heating Model

Thermal recovery involves well-known processes such as steam injection (cyclic steam stimulation, steam drive, and steam-assisted gravity drainage), in situ combustion, and a more recent technique that consists of heating the reservoir with electrical energy. When high frequency is used for heating, it is called electromagnetic (EM) heating. The applications of EM heating for heavy-oil reservoi...
